We have one of the world’s most active advisory practices in public international law.  We have advised sovereign clients on some of the world’s most high-profile and sensitive public international law questions. We have recently advised clients on issues of, inter alia, State responsibility, Statehood and sovereignty, sovereign immunity, treaty interpretation, law of the sea, international environmental law, foreign investment law, international human rights, international humanitarian law, State succession, international refugee law, as well as UN law and procedure.

Highlights of our lawyers’ experience in public international law advice include:

  • advising States and interested private parties on unresolved territorial disputes and maritime boundary delimitations
  • delivering bespoke training programmes for government officials on issues of public international law, including territorial sovereignty, maritime boundary delimitation and international dispute resolution
  • advising major oil companies on sovereignty issues relating to oil concessions in disputed waters and proceedings before the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS)
  • advising private entities on restructuring their investments to avail of investment treaty protection under applicable bilateral and multilateral treaties
  • advising a State’s central bank on the immunity of its assets from attachment in England following an investment treaty award
  • advising a foreign financial institution on potential enforcement proceedings against State-owned assets in England
